My Arizona

DRIVING DOWN THE CANYON -J.Fulkerson

When someone says they are going to visit the Grand Canyon, most people think of the South Rim. You drive, or take the train to the rim. To go to the bottom you hike, ride a mule, or take a helicopter. So what would you say if I said you could drive your car there? Off of Route 66 between Kingman and Seligman is Peach Springs. Driving down Indian Reservation Route 6 will take you through Diamond Canyon and finally, to the Colorado River itself at the bottom of the canyon. This is a primitive dirt road and you will need to purchase a permit at the Wildlife Conservation Office in Peach Springs. Inquire there about road conditions as well.

J. Fulkerson has lived and traveled in Arizona since 1967 and will be publishing a guidebook, My Arizona, with details about this fascinating state.
